Understanding stars is crucial if one wishes to study (exo)planets. This is because the very existence of the planets, and the possibility of life on their surface, depend directly on the mass of the stars and therefore the energy they give off.
This video shows the types of stars and their characteristics. It will thus enable you to classify these bodies and describe how they function.
For more information: Did you know that some stars can make “music”? Just like drums, stars vibrate because of the movements of their internal matter owing to convection and the magnetic field. The science of studying these vibrations is called asteroseismology. In the same way as the study of earthquakes on Earth, asteroseismology studies star quakes, which are a valuable source of information and even enable us to “see” inside the stars!
If you want to dive into the heart of star mechanisms, from their origin to their future fate, listen to the podcasts (radio broadcasts) produced by Ciel et Espace magazine, in collaboration with CEA. The 9 episodes are presented by the astrophysicist Roland Lehoucq, a CEA researcher recognised for his skills as a teacher and populariser.
